Spain edge past Portugal to reach the World Cup quarter-finals

Dallas, Texas, United States- Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup thanks to a late strike from Mikel Merino as the match edged towards extra time at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Luis de la Fuente's substitutions, together with an outstanding second-half display, proved decisive in a finely balanced contest between two of the tournament's leading contenders. Spain will now face the winners of the United States-Belgium tie in the quarter-finals. Cristiano Ronaldo left the pitch in tears after what was likely to be his final World Cup appearance.

The opening draw against Cape Verde served as a timely warning. If Spain wanted to make a deep run in North America, they knew they would have to raise their level. Since then, they have grown into one of the tournament's most complete sides. Defensively, they have been virtually flawless, conceding no goals in five matches — a World Cup record. That defensive solidity has provided the platform for their success, and against Portugal, in what many viewed as an early final, they delivered their most convincing performance yet.

Spain started brightly. Mikel Oyarzabal tested Portugal almost immediately before missing a one-on-one opportunity against Diogo Costa. The Portuguese goalkeeper then produced an excellent double save to deny Lamine Yamal and Álex Baena. Portugal also threatened through João Cancelo and Cristiano Ronaldo, although neither was able to seriously trouble Unai Simón in the early stages.

After Spain's fast start, Portugal gradually grew into the match and the contest became increasingly even. Both sides enjoyed long spells of possession and the battle for midfield control became the defining feature of the first half. Nuno Mendes did an outstanding job of containing Lamine Yamal, while also providing Portugal's greatest attacking threat alongside Pedro Neto. In the 36th minute, the Chelsea winger delivered a dangerous cross, João Félix cleverly flicked it on and Ronaldo looked certain to score, only for Unai Simón to produce a superb save. Four minutes later, Mendes rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort.

The second half belonged almost entirely to Spain. Portugal suffered a major setback when Nuno Mendes was forced off through injury and replaced by Nélson Semedo. His absence proved hugely significant. Spain gradually took complete control of midfield, with Rodri delivering his finest performance since returning from his serious injury and deservedly being named Player of the Match. Dani Olmo constantly found pockets of space, while Álex Baena drifted inside to overload central areas, despite Pedri enjoying a relatively quiet afternoon.

Spain's combinations became increasingly fluid. Renato Veiga produced a crucial block to deny Pedri after an excellent move involving Rodri and Olmo. Lamine Yamal also found far more freedom following Mendes' departure. Baena forced a comfortable save from Diogo Costa before the Portuguese goalkeeper pushed another dangerous free-kick from Lamine around the post.

Spain spent much of the closing stages camped inside Portugal's half, but their dominance still lacked the goal it deserved. It was then that De la Fuente changed the course of the match. Ferran Torres was introduced first, followed ten minutes later by Mikel Merino and Fabián Ruiz. Ferran's impact was immediate. His intelligent runs beyond the Portuguese defence stretched the game and created spaces that had not previously existed.

Deep into stoppage time, the Barcelona forward produced a magnificent through ball to release Merino, and the Arsenal midfielder calmly finished beyond Diogo Costa to send Spain into the quarter-finals.

The match never truly deserved extra time. Spain were the better side over the ninety minutes, particularly after the interval, and Merino once again proved decisive in a major knockout match, just as he had in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Germany. Spain remain yet to concede a goal and continue to improve with every performance at the 2026 World Cup. Lamine Yamal may still have another level to reach, but that hardly matters. The real star of this Spanish side is the collective: a team built patiently over several years that is beginning to look like one of the strongest contenders for the trophy.
