Morocco eliminate Canada and show they can go all the way

Morocco defeated Canada 3-0 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, to become the first side to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. Once again, the Africans captivated with their football, leaving the Canadians with no way back and making them the first host nation to be eliminated from the tournament. A second-half brace from Azzedine Ounahi, followed by a late goal from Soufiane Rahimi, secured qualification, while Brahim Díaz also shone with two assists. France now await for a place in the semi-finals.

The Atlas Lions have made youth development a national priority for years. Football has become a matter of state, with substantial public investment devoted to producing elite talent. The results are evident throughout every level of the national set-up. Many players born in European countries and developed in Europe's top leagues have chosen to represent Morocco, while the country also lifted the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. The only blemish on an almost flawless long-term project came with defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final on home soil. The Moroccan Football Federation reacted swiftly, replacing Walid Regragui's pragmatic, defence-first approach with Mohamed Ouahbi's modern, possession-based philosophy.

The match began at a high tempo, with chances at both ends. Jonathan David broke into the penalty area only to be denied by Bono, who was called into action again moments later to keep out a dangerous effort from Tani Oluwaseyi. Morocco were forced into a change at the heart of defence, with Redouane Halhal replacing the injured Chadi Riad. The new partnership initially took time to settle but gradually found its rhythm.

Morocco emerged after the interval determined to seize control. From a cleverly rehearsed free-kick routine on the edge of the area, Achraf Hakimi rolled the ball into Ounahi's path, allowing the midfielder to finish unmarked and open the scoring. The goal disrupted Canada, who had competed well until that point against a Moroccan side that had clearly missed the injured Ismael Saibari after his first-half departure.

The hosts had little choice but to push forward in search of an equaliser. Bono once again proved decisive, denying Canada on several occasions. David curled a free-kick narrowly wide, while Tajon Buchanan tested the Al Hilal goalkeeper from distance, but Morocco remained composed and in complete control.

With Canada committing more and more players forward, Morocco punished them on the counter-attack in the 81st minute. Rahimi led the break before releasing Brahim on the right. The Real Madrid winger showed superb composure, slowing the move before picking out Ounahi, who calmly slotted home his second goal of the evening. It was another composed finish from the Girona midfielder, who delivered arguably his finest performance of the tournament.

Ounahi almost turned provider moments later, producing an inch-perfect cross that Rahimi headed against the crossbar. Deep into stoppage time, however, Brahim supplied another perfectly weighted pass for Rahimi, who finally got the goal his outstanding display deserved to complete the 3-0 victory.

Morocco march into the quarter-finals believing they can challenge for the biggest prize of all. Their football bears little resemblance to the counter-attacking style that carried them to the semi-finals in Qatar 2022. Under Ouahbi they have become a side that dominates possession, combines with confidence and attacks with imagination, yet they are now just one step away from matching that historic achievement.

Next comes France, arguably the strongest team left in the competition. Chadi Riad and Saibari remain doubts until the last minute, but Morocco head into the tie buoyed by Brahim's return to top form, Ounahi's growing influence and a midfield expertly marshalled by Ayyoub Bouaddi and Neil El Aynaoui. Add the experience and leadership of Achraf Hakimi and Bono, and Morocco possess one of the most complete squads at this World Cup. It is a team where an historic generation has merged seamlessly with an exciting new one. The Atlas Lions are no longer content simply to compete with the world's best—they believe they can become the best.
